MADISON (WKOW) -- Former state Sen. Gary George is running for Congress, challenging fellow Democrat and U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore.
George filed signatures Monday to get on the ballot to challenge Moore for Milwaukee's 4th Congressional District seat. Moore has held that seat since 2005. If both have their signatures verified, they will face off in an August 12 primary.
In an initial county by the Government Accountability Board, George submitted 1,294 signatures. He needed 1,000 valid signatures. The GAB will meet June 10 to certify candidates for the August 12 primary.
George was recalled from his state Senate office in 2003 and convicted in 2004 of one felony count of conspiring to defraud the government.
George says he is running for Congress "in response to citizen demands for stronger leadership from Milwaukee's political community."
