State urged to install sprinklers in GEF-1 building

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Fire Department wants the state to install sprinklers throughout the recently burned GEF-1 building.

Madison Fire Marshal Ed Ruckriegel believes sprinklers could have significantly lessened the damage when a fire started on the building's 4th floor last month.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, initial reports estimate the fire's damage at around $350,000, but fire officials say in buildings equipped with sprinklers the damages typically come to less than $10,000.

Ruckriegel estimates it would cost roughly $600,000 to full outfit the GEF-1 building with sprinklers. Currently, there are sprinklers only in the kitchen and the parking garage.
