High School garage bands compete for top honors

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin's top-ranked high school garage bands competed Saturday night for top honors.

Bands from all over the state played at "The SETT" at UW Madison's Union South.

At the end of the Launchpad state finals competition, the Gabe Burdulis Band took home the first place prize. The band members are from Madison West and Middleton High School.

One music teacher says the competition is a great way to get kids to play outside the classroom.

"What's really exciting about this event is that every year how high energy it is and to see kids taking what they learned from a school music teacher. Taking it out of the classroom and doing your own thing with it," said Kevin Thays of the Wisconsin Music School Association.

The 13 finalist were chosen after regional competitions in different parts of the state earlier this year. They will all be performing at Summerfest in a few weeks.
