'Let us be Dads' the message at Capitol rally Sunday

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Divorced fathers rallied at the state Capitol Sunday afternoon hoping to gain attention for their cause to improve visitation rights for fathers.

Dads of Wisconsin hosted the "Let us be Dads" rally. The organization focuses on supporting fathers going through divorce and dealing with the family court system.

The group is pushing for legislation to amend the state's custody law to require parents to live in the same school district. Right now, parents can live up to 150 miles apart without court approval.

Dads say it's essential for a child to have a father figure and they want more time than the courts allow.

"I feel that it's really important that a father be present in every child's life to give a really good basis, good footing, for that kid to develop values and be a benefit to society, because a lot of statistics show that people who grow up to be the problems in society came from fatherless homes," says Mike Landwehr, with Wisconsin Fathers for Children and Families.

Landwehr's case over the custody of his daughters went to the Supreme Court but he lost.
