Chairman opposes purchase to expand Rock Co. wildlife area

Posted: Updated:
TOWN OF AVON (AP) -- A Rock County town chairman is opposing a state purchase of land to expand a wildlife area.
The Janesville Gazette reports the Department of Natural Resources wants to buy 205 acres of private land to expand the Avon Bottoms Wildlife Area.
The Town of Avon parcel is bordered by DNR land and is within the Avon Bottoms boundaries.
Doug Haag, of the DNR Bureau of Facilities and Lands, says Avon Bottoms is valuable to hunters and anglers and the purchase will protect the habitat and the flood plain of the Sugar River.
Avon Town Chairman Michael Moore says much of the town is owned by the DNR, removing it from tax rolls. But he says the town still has to pay to maintain the roads through Avon Bottoms.
