NEW YORK, NY (WKOW) -- Alexander Imich, the world's oldest man, retired chemist and parapsychologist, has died in New York City.  Imich was 111-years-old.

Imich died at his Manhattan home Sunday, according to his niece, Karen Bogen of Providence, RI.  Bogen states her uncle's health had declined about two weeks ago and, at that time, didn't recognize her.

Imich was born in a town in Poland, then part of Russia, in 1903.  He and his wife fled after Nazis invaded in 1939 and they eventually moved to the U.S. in 1951.  His wife passed away in 1986.

The world's oldest person is a woman, 116-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan.  Guinness is now investigating the claim that Sakari Momoi, of Japan, is now the world's oldest man at 111.
