Blue Green Algae blooms found on Lake Mendota

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Toxic blue-green algae blooms have been found in Lake Mendota.

UW-Madison officials say the blooms were found Tuesday morning near the Memorial Union.

The algae can cause severe reactions in humans and pets, including skin and eye irritation, headaches, fever, or even vomiting and diarrhea.

The health department says to avoid areas with green scummy surface layers, or water that looks like pea-soup.
