Jefferson (WKOW) -- Authorities say the father of one of homicide victim Heather Stewart's children killed her last month, after a meeting was arranged in Watertown.

32-year-old Michael Henderson of Waterloo appeared Wednesday for an initial court appearance via video conference from the Jefferson County jail on a charge of first degree intentional homicide.

A judge set Henderson's bail at $1 million.

A criminal complaint states cell phone records show Stewart and Henderson exchanged text messages the night before her body was found in her car in a Watertown parking lot.

The complaint also states Stewart had proposed the meeting to receive money from Henderson. One of Stewart's friends tells 27 News the money was to help support Stewart and Henderson's young daughter.

Authorities say Henderson initially denied meeting Stewart, then conceded he met her, but made no confession.

Authorities say Stewart, of Clyman in Dodge County, was shot in the head. The complaint states Henderson's baseball cap was found near the body, and surveillance video from a nearby business shows both Stewart and Henderson's cars at the parking lot.

Jefferson County District Attorney Susan Happ says Henderson has at least fifteen, previous criminal convictions, including escape and battery to a law enforcement officer.

Watertown Police officials say the homicide investigation continues, and make no reference to the discovery of any murder weapon.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Henderson June 25.

UPDATE (WKOW) --- The Jefferson County DA's Office tells 27 News that 32-year-old Michael Henderson is being held in Jefferson County Jail in connection to the homicide of Heather Stewart.

Jefferson County Deputy Jared Brandenburg says that Henderson was booked in jail Wednesday morning on tentative charges of First Degree Intentional Homicide.

The DA's office says Henderson is expected to be in court this afternoon.
