NEENAH (WKOW) -- Losing a child is a heartbreaking time in any parent's life, but one Wisconsin mother got a little peace of mind when she met the man whose life was saved because he received her son's heart.
47-year-old Benjamin Adler has had five heart attacks. Adler says he had no other option but a heart transplant in order to keep on going. He joined the list of more than 122,000 other Americans waiting for an organ. Luckily, within 24 hours to live, he was told he would be getting a heart.
Josh Richards was shot and killed at Luna Lounge in Appleton in December, but at age 16, he decided to be an organ donor. His mother, Jackie Pische, got to meet Adler who now has her son's heart for the first time on Wednesday.
"Losing Josh was devastating, but seeing Ben today and his family is awesome," Pische said.
Our affiliate, WBAY, says after the two met, people gathered to celebrate organ donations.
Police say Richards was shot and killed by Chong Lee of Neenah. Lee faces trial in December.
