Rep. Pocan supports amendment protecting wood-aged cheeses

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Rep. Mark Pocan(D-Wisconsin) says he is among a group of lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives planning to move forward with an amendment to the agriculture appropriations bill that would prohibit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) from banning the centuries-old practice of aging cheeses on wood.

In a Friday news release, Rep. Pocan said he wanted clear up some misconceptions about the FDA “clarification” issued Wednesday. Pocan says the FDA has not given Members of Congress any assurance that the practice of wood-aging will be protected.

The new release says the amendment will contain language saying, "funds made available by this Act may be used to establish, implement, or enforce any prohibition against aging or ripening cheese on wood under section 110.40 of title 21, Code of Federal Regulations.”

Wisconsin cheesemakers have expressed concerns about FDA enforcement after the federal agency cited some New York cheesemakers for using wooden planks to age their cheeses.
