MADISON (WKOW) -- Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen sent a letter to District Attorney's across the state regarding charging clerks for issuing same-sex marriage licenses.
Van Hollen stated in the letter, "I did not suggest or recommend criminal charging of County Clerks." He continued, "I never indicated an intention of this office to investigate or charge any county officer."
The Attorney General says he was asked by the Journal Sentinel if clerks could be charged, and Van Hollen acknowledged they could, however it would be very fact specific and up to each individual District Attorney.
