MADISON (WKOW) -- Republican state Senator Neal Kedzie announces he's resigning his seat, as of day's end.

Kedzie previously stated he was retiring at the end of the year.  During Kedzie's announcement today, he stated he was pursuing a "new opportunity", but declined to elaborate.

Kedzie, of Elkhorn, was first elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving four years in the Assembly.  His 11th Senate District includes portions of Jefferson, Waukesha, Rock, Walworth, and Kenosha counties.

Republican state Rep. Steve Nass and Democrat Dan Kilkenny are running for the seat.

Kedzie's seat will be vacant for the remainder of the year.
