Beef prices at all-time high

Posted: Updated:
WISCONSIN (WKOW) -- Beef prices are at an all time high, and state officials say they probably won't drop anytime soon.

The national average for ground beef is just shy of four dollars a pound, which is a 74% jump since 2009.

Production has remained steady in Wisconsin, but a drought in Texas hurt production there. It all means a higher price for consumers. The state AG Secretary says that's a good thing for the industry.

"It's been a really tough ten years for them, and they're finally in the position where they're earning some money. They don't want to go backwards again," said WI DATCP Secretary.

Officials are also blaming the price increase on a seven year drop in the cattle herd.

It can take three years for farmers to expand herd numbers.
