Obama administration pushes for nationwide FMLA benefits

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- On Friday, the Obama administration will announce a rule that makes legally married same-sex couples eligible for benefits under the Family and Medical Leave Act in all fifty states.

The FMLA allows employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for family and medical purposes.  Currently, married same-sex couples are eligible for those benefits if they reside in a state where same-sex marriage is legal.

According to the Wall Street Journal, President Obama is directing the Department of Labor to propose a rule extending those rights even to states where same-sex unions are not legal, as long as couples are legally married.
