Memorial Union's theater reopens with concert after 2 years of construction

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- UW-Madison's Memorial Union theater has reopened after its first major renovations in decades.

The theater, now known as Shannon Hall, was host to a jazz concert Saturday night. It's the first concert since renovations began two years ago in June 2012. The overhaul upgraded the aging theater's heating and cooling system, increased wheelchair access and expanded seating.

"I'm really excited to see how many people showed up [Saturday], I wasn't sure what kind of response we would get, but I think people were really excited to see the hall," says assistant theater director for development and outreach, Heather Good.

This is the first extensive renovation of the Memorial Union's west wing since it was built on campus in 1939.
