Juneteenth Day Celebration

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- It was a recognition of heritage at the annual Juneteenth Day celebration in Madison.

The event, held at Penn Park, commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation. The day the last U.S. slaves were freed, June 19, 1865.

The theme of this year's Juneteenth celebration was harambee, which means pulling together.

"It's just a part of having community, being a part of the community. Celebrating important events and having a good time, so that's what Papa Soul is. You know it's food, with a little soul," said Ed Holmes of Papa Soul.

Event officials hope the celebration teaches people more about African American experiences in the United States.
