Eau Claire school provides free meals to kids during summer

Posted: Updated:

EAU CLAIRE (WKOW) -- As summer school begins across the state, an elementary school in Eau Claire is dishing up more than homework.

Longfellow Elementary School kicked off its summer food service program Monday. They served breakfast and lunch to more than 50 students.

Any child under the age of 18 can get free meals at school, they do not have to be enrolled in the program. Organizers say having this type of program ensures that kids have access to nutritious food when school is not in session.

"There are still students in the area that are still hungry," Eau Claire Area School District Service Director Sue Brown said. "We really want to be there to provide services for those students that might be in need of good meals."

Longfellow Elementary hopes to increase the number of kids they can reach by the end of July. The food service program is funded by the USDA.
