RIVER FALLS (WKOW) -- Steven Linehan from River Falls is being recognized as a hero.  He was recently named School Bus Driver of the Year by the Wisconsin School Bus Association.

Linehan got 40 elementary school students off a bus before it went up in flames last September.  He said he realized something was wrong when he smelt something funny.  Linehan says, "Instincts told me that I needed to get the kids off the bus."

He was able to get the kids to safety before the fire destroyed the bus.  The school district believes the fire was caused by the electrical system.  Linehan was a substitute driver on that route, filling in for someone who was on vacation.

Linehan is very modest about his heroism.  He says, "The biggest heroes in this story are the kids.  They all stayed calm.  They followed direction."

Our affiliate, WQOW, says students go through evacuation training twice a year.
