Dane Co. deputies look for hit and run driver

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Shortly before 9:30 Monday morning, a Dane County Sheriff's Office Freeway Service truck was closing an exit ramp on the eastbound Beltline to John Nolen Drive when it was struck by a passing vehicle.

A deputy was inside the service truck, with emergency lights on and a large digital sign board directing traffic to move over.  Highway crews were on the shoulder removing construction barrels, when a red pick-up side-swiped the truck, hitting the driver's side vehicle.  That driver did not stop, however, likely sustained damage to the passenger side of their pick-up.

If you have any information on this incident, please contact the Dane County tip line at 608-284-6900.

This highlights the reason the Move Over Law was established and the dangers emergency responders and highway workers face daily.  Not moving over or slowing down in these zones can get expensive.  Drivers will be assessed three points on their record and a fine of more than $260.  Any driver who violates the law and becomes involved in a crash will face up to seven years in prison if they hurt or kill someone, and their license will be suspended.
