UPDATE: Gov. Walker's son served as official witness at same-sex wedding

MADISON (WKOW) -- As Gov. Scott Walker was supporting Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen's fight to uphold Wisconsin's same-sex marriage ban last month, his teenage son was busy serving as an official witness to a family member's own same-sex marriage.

An official state record shows Alex Walker, a UW-Madison student whose Facebook page lists him as an intern with the Republican Party of Wisconsin, signed as an official witness to the marriage of Shelli Marquardt and Cathy Priem on June 9th in Waukesha County.

Laurel Patrick, a spokesperson for Gov. Walker, confirmed Thursday afternoon that one of the two witness signatures on Marquardt and Priem's marriage certificate belongs to Alex Walker.

"Shelli Marquardt is the First Lady's cousin whom the First Lady and her family dearly love," Patrick told 27 News, but did not say whether or not Tonette Walker was also present at the marriage ceremony.

Tonette Walker also knows Priem, as both sit on the Wisconsin Executive Residence Foundation Board.  The board is a non-profit fundraising organization dedicated to preserving the Governor's mansion.

While supporting AG Van Hollen's efforts to appeal U.S. Judge Barbara Crabb's ruling that the state ban is unconstitutional, Gov. Walker has steered clear of giving his personal opinion on the ban, telling the media it was "irrelevant" just three days after the Marquardt/Priem marriage.  But Walker had been a staunch supporter of the ban during his 2010 campaign for Governor.

Patrick has not yet responded to questions about whether Gov. Walker was aware his son had served as an official witness to the wedding, or whether he considers Marquardt's marriage to be legal.

Capitol Bureau Chief Greg Neumann will have more on this story on 27 News at 5 and 6.
