Schmaltz seeing NHL dreams come true

Posted: Updated:

VERONA, WI (WKOW) -- Growing up in Verona, 18-year old Nick Schmaltz was always a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, adding a little extra spice to Draft Day, when he was selected 20th over in the NHL Draft by his favorite team.

"It was a fun experience, that was the team I wanted to play for when i grew up," Schmaltz said. "I couldn't be more excited to be a part of the Blackhawks."

Before jumping to the NHL, Schmaltz will attend the University of North Dakota to play hockey, joining his brother Jordan who will be a junior.

"It should be fun. We both have a similar style of game. Even though he's a d-man hes really offensive, good vision. If we are on the ice we'll find each other."

Like Nick, Jordan was also a first-round draft choice, selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Nick plans on playing at least two years at North Dakota, so he can be ready to sign with the Blackhawks one day.

"I'm hoping for 2 or 3 years at North Dakota. If I need four years I'll play, as long as I can be a professional athlete I'll do whatever it takes."
