Janesville man sentenced for embezzlement

Posted: Updated:

JANESVILLE (WKOW)-- A Janesville man convicted of stealing $1.8 million from his employer will spend two years and six months in prison.

Steven R. Stoikes used to work for a Janesville contractor. Prosecutors say the 44-year-old ordered more copper tubing than jobs required, and sell the excess for scrap. A criminal complaint says the thefts continued for more than seven years.

The prosecutor said Stoikes visited a casino more than 500 times between 2006 and 2012, and says Stoikes wagered about $24 million and lost more than $3 million. Stoikes’ attorney says his client has been getting treatment for a gambling addiction.

Stoikes sobbed at Wednesday’s sentencing as he apologized to his family.
