MONONA (WKOW) -- Thousands of people headed down to Winnequah Park in Monona for their annual Fourth of July celebration.
Part of the fun, the wife carry race.
The bizarre contest takes racers through 278 yards of sand, tires, and water hazards, while their partner clings for dear life on their back.

Caade Trones says, "Oh my god this was probably one of the hardest races I have ever run in my life."

His partner Vanessa, who hung onto his back said, "It's tougher for him, not for me, I was just holding on."
The grand prize, the weight of the person carried in beer, plus five dollars per pound of the person carried, which came out to about $500 dollars and several cases of beer.
