Stoughton Fair promotes farming ethic, fun

Posted: Updated:

STOUGHTON (WKOW) -- The Fourth of July weekend was the perfect opportunity for the city of Stoughton to highlight its farming heritage and its penchant for fun.

The five-day, non profit Stoughton Fair featured a midway of rides, and concessions of food of many varieties.

Competitions were also staged with livestock in the fair's pavilion. Megan Schmitt and Mara Shelley claimed reserve junior championships and other awards, and said they knew what judges were looking for.

"Dairy judging is kind of like picking a car," Schmitt says. "You like to pick out a car that looks best. With a cow, you love her for her frame, her size, her structure, her balance, her feet and legs, the depth of her body."

"And when she comes a cow, if she'll be the most beneficial," Shelley adds.

Contestants came from various 4-H Clubs, the Future Farmers of America and other organizations, and many winners and others will go on to the state fair in August.
