Debate over Highway Trust Fund could put local construction projects on hold

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW)-- National politicians in Washington D.C. are preparing to debate whether or not to extend funding for the Federal Highway Trust Fund. Nationwide more than 100,000 construction projects use money from this fund including the Verona Road project in Madison and Fitchburg.

The fund is set to run out by the end of August if congress does not act. Right now both parties are drafting ideas on how to move forward with the fund. Some argue the fund needs to be downsized in order to save money. Others including Congressman Mark Pocan believe that current funding levels need to be extended in order to keep current projects on schedule. Pocan argues that nearly 700,000 jobs nationwide are at stake.

Tonight on 27 News at 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. we'll hear from Congressman Pocan and local construction leaders about their concerns for the fund and how it will affect local projects.
