Wisconsin bishop weighs in on part-time Mayo doctor recommending abortions

Posted: Updated:
LA CROSSE (WKOW) -- A La Crosse Bishop says allegations a doctor who works part-time at Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare is recommending abortions are scandalous.

The La Crosse Tribune reported Leif and Karen Arvidson began regular pickets outside Mayo-Franciscan March 5, based on their contention that Dr. Carl Rose at Mayo in Rochester, Minn. had advised an abortion in 2012. Leif and Arvidson say they want the hospital to stop working with Dr. Rose.

Neither the hospital system nor the clinic has said whether Rose performs abortions.

The Arvidsons say Bishop William Callahan provided a statement June 24 he had given to hospital administrators, which said Catholic hospitals must not allow abortion services and counseling.

Mayo-Franciscan CEO Dr. Tim Johnson said they remain committed to care in accord with their Catholic mission, and legal and medical obligations.
