Town of Madison committee approves day shelter plan

Posted: Updated:

TOWN OF MADISON (WKOW)—The plan for the Dane County homeless day center is moving forward, after the Town of Madison planning committee approved the building plans Monday night.

The county wants to buy the current Porchlight Hospitality site on Martin Street, and convert it into a larger space that will include laundry and shower facilities for the homeless. The plan has been met with objections by those living near the proposed location.

The building plan passed with three votes in favor, one opposed and one abstaining. The approval of the plan does come with an extensive list of conditions, according to the town’s director of public works, Rick Rose. He says those conditions will require approval of the full Town Board.

Monday’s meeting was attended by roughly 40 community members, who were allowed to comment on the site plan. Rose says there were several comments and questions from the public.

The planning committee initially rejected the site plan last month, but the county submitted a more detailed building plan, which the Town Board referred back to the committee.

The full Town Board meets on Monday, July 14.
