Brass markers stolen from graves of veterans

Posted: Updated:
DODGE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Vandals hit a cemetery in Dodge County over the Independence Day weekend.

They stole dozens of brass markers and flag holders from the graves of veterans in Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam.

It'll cost about $2,000 to replace them, much more than the couple hundred bucks the thieves might get if they were sold for scrap.

The cemetery manager, Russ Kottke, says the crime is about more than any financial loss.

"Disgraceful, I mean, you're not honoring the veterans.  I mean it's a disgrace to the veterans."

He says the markers will be replaced, but they may have to switch to plastic, in hopes they won't be stolen again.
