Boy shot in head in Walworth County identified, declared brain dead

SHARON (WKOW) -- The Walworth County Sheriff's Office confirms a boy shot in the head Wednesday in the Sharon is brain dead.

The office identified the child as Eric Gutierrez, age 11.

Gutierrez was shot just past 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in a wooded area behind a home on County Trunk Highway K in the Town of Sharon. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville, where he was declared brain dead at 12:38 a.m. Thursday.

In a new release, the sheriff's office says its investigators have interviewed a 13-year-old boy who was a witness, and that they have recovered the handgun and other evidence.

The family has established a donation website of to offset the unexpected costs.

WISN-TV reports the Walworth County Coroner's Office says the boy has been declared brain dead, but not clinically dead.

Walworth County deputies responded to the shooting in a field behind a family farm around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The boy was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

Undersheriff Kurt Picknell said his office is investigating and it's too early to say if the shooting was accidental. He said the incident involved two boys, the victim and a witness.
