UPDATE: Grant County officials say 9-year-old boy died in grain bin accident

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE (WKOW) --- Grant County officials tell 27 News that a 9-year-old boy has died after being stuck in a grain bin.

It happened around 12:35 p.m. when the family was trying to fix an auger in the grain bin that had become stuck.  The boy was helping his father unclog the auger when he became trapped in the bin. Emergency crews arrived within minutes but weren't able to free the child in time.

The incident happened at 2558 Dry Hollow Road in Liberty Township. The Southwest Wisconsin Regional Technical Rescue Team started cutting the metal siding of the grain bin in an attempt to drain the corn and free the child.

"It was about half full of corn, three quarters full of corn, and just mainly the dad couldn't get him out," Grant County Chief Deputy Jack Johnson says. "It became a rescue effort to try and get all the corn out and get the child out."

The Med Flight helicopter and Lancaster ambulance were standing by to rush the child to the hospital, but just after 12:30 p.m., rescue workers found the boy's body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office says they are not pursuing any criminal charges against the family or anyone in else in connection with this incident. They said children working near grain bins is fairly common in the area, but they'd like to extend a warning to all farmers that this incident shows just how dangerous grain bins can actually be.
