Life jacket required when paddle boarding

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Paddle boarding has become a very popular sport on Madison area lakes.

With the Midwest Paddle Boarding Festival downtown this weekend, the DNR is issuing a number of safety reminders.

The DNR says all paddle boarders must have a life jacket on board with them.

And while its not required to wear the life jacket, it's highly recommended.

Nathan Kroeplin, the Madison Team Conservation Warden Supervisor says, "Being a relatively new sport, a lot of people are not aware of the requirements and it is something that we have had to contact a lot of people about."

The DNR also recommends to check the weather before going out, and it's always a good idea to paddle board with a friend, that way someone is there to help you incase something happens.
