Stevens Point officials using equipment for grain bin rescues

Posted: Updated:
STEVENS POINT (WKOW) -- A 9-year-old boy died after becoming trapped in a grain bin in Grant County Thursday. Now, a central Wisconsin farming community is taking steps to help prevent a tragedy like that from happening.

The Stevens Point FFA alumni recently purchased special equipment for grain bin rescues. Agriculture agents in the area say the equipment can save lives.

"If you get stuck in the grain, even up to your waist, you really can't pull yourself out," Ken Schroeder, a UW Portage County Extension Agriculture agent, said.

The rescue equipment is put in the grain around the person needing help. The rescuers are then able to scoop out the grain, releasing pressure from the trapped person.
