Baby birds crushed, stomped to death in Winnebago County

Posted: Updated:
WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WKOW) -- The Department of Natural Resources is investigating a gruesome crime in Winnebago County; more than two dozen endangered baby birds, crushed and stomped to death.

The DNR says the slaughter of the common tern chicks happened on a remote island in Lake Butte des Morts.

They were between 2 and 21 days old.

"This was just a malicious act that really can't be justified," said DNR wildlife supervisor John Huff.

Investigators are looking for leads to find who killed the birds.   The common tern is on the endangered list and killing them is a crime.
