CampHERO encouraging young girls in Wisconsin

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Young girls are introduced to careers in protective services at CampHERO.

Police officers, firefighters, paramedics and dispatchers teach the kids about their jobs in this hands-on camp.

It's open to girls entering kindergarten, up to recent high school graduates.

"We know from research that kids have stereotypical ideas about what they can or can't be by the time they enter kindergarten," Jennifer Roman, the EMS captain with the Madison Fire Department, said. "So we decided that CampHERO would be offered to even the very young children to plant those seeds and hope they grow."

CampHERO is an effort to bridge the gap of the number of females in the police and fire professions.
