Thieves caught trying to sell stolen pipe at recycling plant

MADISON (WKOW) -- An employee at a metal recycling plant stalls two suspected copper thieves Tuesday morning.

Staff at Alter Metal Recycling on Sycamore Avenue on the cities east side had been alerted by Hooper Corporation to be on the lookout after $1,500 worth of copper pipe was stolen last week from a construction site.

The pipe, which 51-year-old Thomas King and 39-year-old Rodney Wipperfurth were trying t sell, had identifying marks which matched those of the pipe stolen last week.

Officers arrived and arrested the men on parole violations, but detectives are looking at tentatively charging them with receiving stolen property and possibly burglary.

A Hooper Corporation employee says about $10,000 worth of copper piping has been stolen has been stolen in the past few months from an Eastpark Blvd. construction site.
