Mallards confident in post-season appearance despite losing first half

MADISON, WI (WKOW) -- With less than a month left in the regular season, the Madison Mallards are battling for a spot in the Northwoods League playoffs.

The Mallards fell short in the first half of the season, finishing third.

Madison is the defending Northwoods League champion and is currently in second place in the South division, behind first-half winners, the Lakeshore Chinooks; however, the Mallards have just a half-game cushion on the Wisconsin Woodchucks.

Still, the teams says they are confident they will see the post-season.

"No question in my mind we'll make it to the playoffs," said outfielder Alex Bacon. "We've got the pitching to do it, and we've got the guys to do it. I think the key is going to be pitching and timely hitting and not giving them any extra outs.

Hitting has been hit and miss for the Mallards in the second half.

"We get guys on base, but that one big hit we're always missing," said pitcher Christian Taugner. "So, once that begins to be put together, we'll be fine. We have no doubt. There's no rush right now, we're not worried. It's just coming together as a team and really pulling through in the second half."

The Mallards will try to sweep the Bullfrogs Wednesday night in Green Bay.
