VILLAGE OF ROCKDALE (WKOW) – A Cottage Grove man was arrested for his first drunken driving offense causing injury after he struck the side of a building.
According to Dane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to the Rockdale Bar, 222 Water Street, after getting a report of a vehicle versus building crash. Officials say the man, John W. Carr, 72, was driving a cargo van and was backing into a parking stall in the bar’s parking lot. However, the vehicle accelerated, hit a vehicle and then the side of the building, causing significant damage.
Gasoline was leaking from the van, so witnesses helped Carr and his passenger, Vivian O’Connor, 60, also of Cottage Grove, get out of the vehicle.
Officials arrested Car for first offense drunken driving, causing injury. Carr and O’Connor were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. Deputies also say they believe Carr struck and damaged a power pole on Hillside Road minutes before the vehicle versus building crash.
