BLACK EARTH (WKOW) -- The owner of Black Earth Meats says his business will be closed by the end of July.
Owner Bartlett Durand posted on the business' Facebook page that the company's "bank was unable to renew its note as a result of the Village of Black Earth's ongoing actions against the business as a 'public nuisance'". Because of that, Durand says Black Earth Meats has conducted its last slaughter and that by the end of July it will no longer be open for business, with the exception of cleaning out its inventory.
Durand says 22 employees will lose their jobs.
Court records show Black Earth Meats has filed a lawsuit against the Village of Black Earth. The Wisconsin State Journal reports the lawsuit asks for $5.3 million in damages.
The village had received complaints from neighbors who live near the company's slaughterhouse on Mills Street with concerns over the smell and the noise of animals coming into the facility. In December of 2013, the Black Earth village board ordered Black Earth Meats to develop a plan to move its slaughterhouse away from homes.
