Accused kidnapper pleads not guilty to amended charge

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The suspect in the kidnapping of a newborn from the town of Beloit pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Federal court records show Kristen Smith entered the plea to an amended charge. The charge was changed in June to reflect a minimum penalty of 25 years, if Smith is convicted. The maximum sentence is life in prison.

Smith is accused of taking her nephew, Kayden Powell, from a home in the town of Beloit in February. Authorities tracked them down in Iowa. The crossing of state lines is what led to the federal charge.

Her trial begins July 28.
