Platteville honors storm cleanup volunteers

Posted: Updated:

PLATTEVILLE (WKOW) -- The annual "Party in the Park" recognizes volunteers from various organizations throughout the Platteville community.

But Thursday night, the city of Platteville as well as the Platteville Regional Chamber of Commerce, UW-Platteville and Platteville Main Street Program put on a special ceremony honoring those who volunteered with recent, storm cleanup efforts in the city.

Platteville was hit by a pair of tornadoes on June 16.

Kathy Kopp, the executive director of the chamber of commerce, said the community was left "stunned" in the aftermath.

City officials said first responders from 37 different agencies converged on Platteville following the storms to help with the cleanup.

"At the point we realized that something of that magnitude had struck the city, we immediately asked for additional resources from other fire departments," said Platteville Fire Chief Ryan Simmons.

Representatives from those various agencies received honorary certificates Thursday in front of a large crowd at Platteville City Park.

Kopp and the chamber also attempted to honor all of the civilian volunteers who helped with the cleanup.

A pair of signs, displaying more than 600 names, were erected near the chamber's booth at the park. Kopp said the chamber sought to obtain the names of all who volunteered their time to rebuilding Platteville in the aftermath of the storm. She said there were too many names listed to read aloud. But Kopp said she hoped people attending the Party in the Park would take the time to read over them and appreciate all who volunteered

"I'm not surprised people wanted to help," Kopp said. "I am surprised at how many people stepped up."

"It's very reassuring to know that if we do need help, people will be here," she said. "People have each others' backs here."
