Boys and Girls Club receives major grant

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- A $900,000 grant will help low-income students in Madison and Verona.

The Boys and Girls Club of Dane County is receiving $600,000 of that money, which was awarded by Great Lakes Higher Education.

Officials say the money will mostly be used for mentorship programs to help inspire under-privileged students to attend college.

Michael Johnson, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County says, "We want to make sure we connect our young people with positive adults in this community through mentoring, guests speakers coming out to schools to inspire our young people, and through paid internships."

The grant is part of nearly $9 million that Great Lakes has awarded to colleges and community-based organizations in four different states.
