UPDATE: 1 dead, 1 hurt in plane crash near air show

OSHKOSH (AP) -- The Experimental Aircraft Association says a pilot was killed and his passenger seriously injured when a plane crashed at the Oshkosh airport, where planes taking part in the annual AirVenture convention land.

EAA spokesman Dick Knapinksi says the plane went down on the southeast side of Wittman Regional Airport about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Knapinski says the man piloting the custom-built Breezy aircraft died from his injuries. The pilot's female passenger is in serious condition.

Names and hometowns of those involved were not immediately released.

Knapinski says the airport was close temporarily, but was reopened to departures about an hour later.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

OSHKOSH (WKOW) -- EAA AirVenture officials updated the condition of two people hurt after a plane crashed at Oshkosh airport.

According to our Green Bay affiliate WBAY-TV a male victim is in critical condition and a female is in serious condition.

The plane crashed and caught fire around 9:30 Thursday morning. The crash shut the airport down for about an hour before re-opening to departing flights.

Officials aren't sure whether the plane, a two-person breezy, was taking off or landing when it crashed.

Two people on board the plane were taken to the hospital, the severity of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The crash forced the airport to shut down temporarily, but was reopened to departures about an hour later.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.
