MADISON – Thursday’s action in the 2014 All City Swim Meet featured meet records in 8 events and pool records in 15 more, setting the stage for another full slate Friday when 8-and-under and 9-and 10-year-old swimmers compete.

The 53rd annual meet is being held at Nakoma Golf Club and runs through Saturday. Admission is free; bleacher seating for 900 is available.

About 1,835 swimmers, ages four through 18, will take part this week. That total makes it one of the largest open-air meets in the United States.

Meet records fell in the girls 11-12 200-yard medley relay, with a team from Hawk’s Landing Swim Team posting a time of 1:58.31 seconds, and in the boys 13-14 200-yard medley relay, with a team from Monona Swim and Dive Club posting a time of 1:43.40. Complete results are available at

Six individual meet records included two each by Beata Nelson of Ridgewood and Gabriela Pierobon Mays of Hawks Landing.

The All City Swim Meet began in 1962 with the Hill Farm, Shorewood Hills, Ridgewood, Maple Bluff and West Side pools taking part. The meet culminates the All City recreational swim seasonthat includes 13 swim teams. In addition to the five original clubs, the list now includes the Nakoma, Monona, Middleton, Parkcrest, High Point, Seminole, Hawks Landing and Goodman pools.

The meet was last hosted at Nakoma’s six-lane, 25-yard pool in 1985. The first two days feature preliminary heats of events as well as the medley (back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly and freestyle) relay race finals. Saturday features the freestyle relay races and finals in each age group. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers and ribbons to the top 18.

There are 70 events, with multiple heats in each event. That total includes five individual events (free, back, breast, fly and medley); two relay events (medley and free) and five age groups each for boys and girls: 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18.

Meet organizers and the 13 pools hope to raise 185,000 meals for the Food/Fund Drive Challenge for the Second Harvest Foodbank. Since 2008, the Challenge has raised more than 986,000 meals. The Food/Fund Drive winner is announced midday Saturday.

Premier sponsors of the 2014 All City Swim Meet are American Transmission Company, Park Bank, Children’s Dental Center of Madison S.C. and M3 Insurance.
