Quarterbacks in question again as Badgers enter fall camp

Posted: Updated:
MADISON, WI -- Here we go again. It seems the story line is the same every year: the Badgers enter fall camp still wondering who will be the starting quarterback.

Last season, Joel Stave ultimately beat out Tanner McEvoy for the job. McEvoy was then moved to safety.

"Just playing on the field in a division one game is something I can take away from that," said McEvoy.

But Stave then suffered a shoulder injury during the Capital One Bowl in January which kept him out of much of spring practice, opening the door for McEvoy to take the majority of the snaps.

"It was tough sitting on the sidelines, but I'm excited to get back out there for this camp," said Stave.

"He's done everything he can except play spring football," said head coach Gary Andersen. "His body looks good. He's worked on his throwing motion. He's studied the game."

While many teams would probably like to have this question answered by now, Stave and McEvoy are looking at the situation as something that can only benefit the team.

"That's how the quarterback position is," said Stave "You always want to find the next best guy and it's my job to worry about what I can control and taking it one day at a time."

Another wrench in this battle is incoming freshman DJ Gillins, who practiced with the team in the spring. Andersen has made it clear he will give everyone a chance to compete for their position's starting job.
