UPDATE: Wisconsin ranks No. 8 in number of farmers markets

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Sunday is the start to National Farmers' Market Week and USDA officials are visiting Madison to celebrate.

Dane County Farmers' Market is hosting the USDA's Agriculural Marketing Services Administrator Anne Alonzo this weekend, to talk about the agency's latest data.

The USDA has found a continued demand for farmers' markets across the country. Wisconsin is 8th in the nation for number of markets with 295. California has the most at 764.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin took time Saturday to say thanks to all the farmers who make Dane County's market possible.

"Appreciating the quality of nutritous food and developing a local economy, the producers that are here around the square are celebrating their labor with us," Soglin says.

Dane County Farmers' Market is the largest producers-only market in the country.
