Madison brewery wins statewide entrepreneur grant

MADISON (WKOW) -- A local brewery with a unique business plan is being recognized for its innovation.

MobCraft Brewing started up in 2013. Its three young owners share a space with House of Brews on the east side of Madison, brewing and bottling their specialty craft beers.

This summer, the company was chosen to win a category in the Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest. MobCraft took home a total of $13,000 in grants to focus on PR, branding and accounting.

The brewery is an interactive addition to the craft beer industry here in Madison.

"People submit ideas for beers [online], the beers kind of battle against each other for a 21 day period and then the beer that has the most votes is the one that wins at the end of the month," says president Henry Schwartz. "That's the one we'll brew and package and distribute out to all our fans."

So far, the company has been brewing up about one new beer a month, with a regular favorite always available. They sell to local bars and liquor stores and just this month started distributing to 13 states.

The owners say the unusual concept, based 100 percent on customer suggestions, is unique to the industry. Whether ideas come in as full recipes, concepts or just a name, brewer Andrew Gierczak will develop it into their next brew.

"We've had some people with different ethnicities who have suggested beers, simply based off of combinations, flavors they find in their own native foods, like passionfruit and basil," Gierczak tells 27 News. "I never would have thought about that but it's like, OK that actually made a pretty good beer, so I was very happy with it."

For the first time this year, MobCraft will bring its beers to the annual Great Taste of the Midwest, held in Madison. They'll share their 10 favorite brews with local beer fans, hoping to spread the word about their concept. They'll also hold a pre-party at the brewery off Stoughton Road on Friday night.

Schwartz tells 27 News they hope to one day bring in enough business to move to their own location and continue expanding.
