Badgers' Andersen concerned about backup nose guard

MADISON, WI (WKOW) -- As the Badger football team nears the end of the first week of fall practice, the depth at each position is becoming more apparent.

So is the lack of depth--specifically at nose guard.

Backup Bryce Gilbert transferred this off-season, and Andersen noted Thursday there is still a question as to who will replace him and share the load with starter Warren Herring.

"We sit with [Arthur] Goldberg, [Conor] Sheehy and [Jeremy] Patterson at the backup nose guard spot," said Andersen. "I don't know how much of a battle it is, but I know it's not where we need to be. Right now, Warren would probably have to play every snap. That's a big concern.

Last season, Herring backed up senior Beau Allen.

"It was a good one-two punch," Andersen continued. "It's such a vital role to the defense. So, my hope is that those kids will play within our scheme and they'll develop the toughness it takes to play at that spot. But we've got a long way to go and that worries me."
