Green Bay church plans $46,000 repairs for bells

Posted: Updated:

GREEN BAY (AP) -- A Green Bay congregation is repairing its set of church bells for $46,000.

Green Bay Press-Gazette Media says the First Evangelical Lutheran Church will start to preserve its carillon.  It's a musical instrument consisting of bells and motors.

The church's pastor says its carillon has 47 bells and a four-octave range.  The largest bell weighs 2,200 pounds while the smallest is the size of a paint can.  The instrument sits at the top of the church's tower.

The World Carillon Federation says it's one of three in the state and one of 165 in the nation.  The church's carillon was commissioned in 1957.  It still uses 1950s technology to run its motors.

The congregation voted on July 27 to fund the repairs, which could last five to 10 years.
