WAUSAU (WAOW) – One person was killed and nine young people were injured, two of them critically, when a sport utility vehicle rolled over northeast of Wausau Friday as the group headed to a recreation area to go swimming, authorities said.
The crash happened about 10 a.m. near the intersection of state Highway 52 and County Y, the Marathon County Sheriff's Department said.
Fire chiefs for the Town of Easton and the joint Weston and Rib Mountain fire departments said no other details were immediately available about where the people were from or the cause of the crash.
The name of the person killed was not immediately released.
Two of the people hurt were listed in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield early Friday afternoon, authorities said. Their genders and ages were unknown.
Five people taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital were in stable condition, according to Director of Communications Andy Napgezek. Four were released late Friday afternoon, he said. The most seriously injured had a broken leg and some chest injuries, a doctor said.
Two girls, ages 12 and 14, were taken to Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital in Weston, spokesman Tom Weaver said. The younger girl was treated and released and the 14-year-old was in good condition but she transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital for observation, Weaver said.
According to a parent who had children in the crash, the group was headed to Eau Claire Dells to go swimming. The area is popular for swimming, hiking and picnicking.
The crash closed state Highway 52 for more than four hours. It reopened about 2:30 p.m.
