'Pig Rassle' goes on despite protests, online petition

STEPHENSVILLE (WKOW) -- An Outagamie County church held its annual "Pig Rassle" on Sunday amid controversy across the state.

The event has been around for 44 years, but this year protestors attended. An online petition and a YouTube video had 60,000 activists asking St. Patrick's Parish in Stephensville to cancel the event.

The stands were packed Sunday with people cheering as they watched participants try to catch and lift the pig to touch a barrel but protestors stood outside.

"It really was just something I didn't know existed. I can't imagine this is fun or entertainment for people," Kim Socha, a demonstrator from Minneapolis, told our Green Bay affiliate WBAY-TV.

Despite protestors, those watching the event say they support it.

"If I thought we were harming them in any way, shape or form, I would absolutely not be participating in this," Amanda Schroth, who has participated in the event several times, said.
